Beit Ummar's Agricultural Revival: Modern Grape Farming Creates New Economic Opportunities in Hebron
CFJ supports farmers in Beit Ummar to revive traditional Palestinian grape cultivation through modern, sustainable farming that strengthens rural livelihoods.
In the agricultural lands of Beit Ummar, north of Hebron, farmers are working to revive traditional Palestinian agriculture through innovative and sustainable farming models that transform threatened agricultural land into productive economic opportunities for local communities.
The Center for Freedom and Justice (CFJ) has been implementing agricultural empowerment initiatives in Beit Ummar aimed at strengthening farmers' resilience, preserving agricultural heritage, and increasing productivity through modern cultivation systems.

The initiative focuses on cultivating local grape varieties, particularly the well-known Shami grapes (red and white) and Balouti grapes, both of which are considered important and highly valued varieties in Palestinian agriculture and local markets. These grape types are known for their quality, strong market demand, and ability to remain fresh until February under proper agricultural conditions.

CFJ's agricultural projects aim to:
- Expand the number of productive seedlings and trees
- Support farmers with modern agricultural techniques
- Transform underutilized land into sustainable economic projects
- Strengthen food security and rural economic resilience
- Preserve Palestinian agricultural identity and traditional crops
Over the past 15 years, agricultural land in many Palestinian areas has significantly declined. However, local farmers and agricultural activists believe that improving farming efficiency and increasing productive tree cultivation can compensate for shrinking agricultural spaces while protecting rural livelihoods.
Through agricultural newsletters, online outreach, and community engagement, CFJ is also working to promote awareness about sustainable agriculture and encourage greater investment in productive farming initiatives across rural communities.
The Center for Freedom and Justice calls upon donors, agricultural development agencies, and humanitarian partners to invest in sustainable agricultural projects in Beit Ummar and the Hebron region that combine economic empowerment, environmental sustainability, and protection of Palestinian farming heritage.
