Story

Introduction

The Ramadan Project 2018 “People of Love” was an initiative aimed at addressing the pressing needs of families living in extreme poverty during the holy month of Ramadan. This sacred time of the year is often associated with generosity and community support, yet many families in impoverished regions face significant challenges in meeting their basic needs. Recognizing this, the project aimed to provide essential food assistance to vulnerable families. By distributing food parcels, the initiative sought to alleviate hunger and to foster a sense of dignity and hope for those struggling with severe economic hardships. The project was executed with the support of local and international partners, including the LIFE Foundation, ensuring a collaborative approach to community welfare.

Case

In many regions, families were living in dire poverty, exacerbated by a lack of access to essential services. This included areas with limited or no access to electricity, clean water, and healthcare, making daily survival a constant struggle. The Ramadan month, which is supposed to be a time of spiritual reflection and communal gathering, presented additional challenges as families found it difficult to secure enough food for their daily meals. The ongoing cycle of poverty meant that families often had to choose between spending on basic needs like food or other critical resources such as healthcare. The situation was particularly dire for children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities. The Ramadan Project 2018 was launched in direct response to these challenges, focusing on providing immediate relief and support to alleviate the harsh living conditions of these families.

Solutions

The primary solution put forward by the Ramadan Project 2018 was the distribution of food parcels to the most affected families. These parcels contained essential food staples such as rice, flour, sugar, and cooking oil, which are critical components of daily meals. The goal was to ensure every household had enough food to sustain them throughout the month of Ramadan. The selection of families in the 9 different villages in Hebron area, south of West Bank, Palestine, was based on specific criteria, targeting those living in the poorest regions where the need was greatest. The villages were chosen due to the inhabitants’ constant pressure from the Israeli occupation and lack of basic rights like freedom of movement and the chance to develop their land and secure their own income. The parcels were carefully curated to ensure that they provided balanced nutrition, supporting the health and well-being of the recipients. The solution bout providing food and empowering families by relieving the financial pressure that often accompanies food insecurity, allowing them to focus on other aspects of their lives during Ramadan.

Activities

The distribution of food parcels was the primary activity carry out by the project, but it was far more than a simple handout operation. The success of the initiative relied heavily on careful planning, coordination, and community involvement. The process began with the identification of the target families in 9 different villages in Hebron area, south of West Bank, Palestine. This was done in collaboration with local authorities and community leaders who had a deep understanding of the socio-economic conditions of the families in their regions. Once the families were selected, a logistical plan was developed to ensure that the food parcels were delivered efficiently and on time.

  1. Preparation and Coordination: The first step involved sourcing the food items that would be included in the parcels. This was done through local suppliers to ensure the quality and freshness of the goods while also supporting the local economy. Once the items were procured, volunteers and local partners helped in assembling the food parcels, ensuring that each one contained enough supplies to meet the dietary needs of a family for several days.
  2. Outreach and Awareness: Before the actual distribution, outreach efforts were made to inform the families about the assistance they would be receiving. This was critical in ensuring that the distribution was orderly and that the families were prepared to receive the aid. Flyers, phone calls, and local leaders played an important role in spreading the message.
  3. Distribution Process: The distribution took place in several waves, with parcels delivered directly to the families in the areas hardest hit by poverty. On the 21th of May the first day a total of 50 families in Al-Fawar Camp and Yatta Area got food boxes. The main income for the inhabitants here are based on agriculture, but they are surrounded by several Israeli settlements. The settlements are a constant threat to the inhabitants’ physical safety, freedom of movement and livelihoods. The farmers are pressured to stay away from their land due to attacks and harassment. This problem increases during planting and harvesting seasons. On the second day 22th of May we distributed food boxes to 80 families in Um Alkhair, Sussiya, Mofajara and Tawaniya Village in the South Hebron Hills area. An area where the lack of water, electricity is a huge challenge for the inhabitants and where the infrastructure and possibilities to develop are almost absent due to the Israeli occupation. By living in Area C, under full Israeli control, all people suffer from lack of public services and infrastructure. Many of the families in these villages live in caves and tents. On the last day 23rd of May a total of 70 families in Beit Ummar, Jala and Jaba'a village got food boxes. The main income for the inhabitants here are based on agriculture, but they are surrounded by several Israeli settlements. The settlements is a constant threat to the inhabitants’ physical safety, freedom of movement and livelihoods. The farmers are pressured to stay away from their land due to attacks and harassment. This problem increases during planting and harvesting seasons. To ensure that the process was efficient and dignified, specific distribution points were set up in accessible locations. In some cases, for families living in particularly remote or inaccessible areas, volunteers made home deliveries. The project utilized a wide network of volunteers, who delivered food and engaged with the families to understand their broader needs. This interaction allowed for a more holistic approach to aid distribution, ensuring that families felt seen and heard.
  4. Monitoring and Feedback: After the distribution, follow-up efforts were made to assess the effectiveness of the project. Feedback was collected from the beneficiaries to understand the impact of the food aid on their daily lives. This feedback was critical for refining future projects and ensuring that the assistance provided met the actual needs of the families. Volunteers also reported on the conditions in the areas they visited, highlighting any additional challenges that the community might face, such as health concerns or access to clean water.
