Introduction

The Beit Ummar Children Summer Camp 2016, titled "When the Laughs of Children Occupied the Territories," was a significant project aimed at providing a safe and joyful environment for children who lives in the Occupied Territories facing the harsh realities of conflict. These children, often exposed to conflict and hardship, had few opportunities to experience the joys of childhood. This summer camp was created to offer them a sense of normality, an escape from the daily stresses of life, and a chance to engage in educational and fun activities. By providing such an outlet, the camp hoped to foster emotional healing and personal development strengthened community, empowering the next generation with hope and resilience amongst their challenging circumstances.

Case

Children in the Occupied Territories face numerous challenges, including exposure to violence, instability, and repressive policies. These children are often deprived of the innocence and carefree nature of childhood, making them especially vulnerable. As the first victims of these harsh circumstances, they lack opportunities to express themselves, creativity, or engage in activities that promote mental and emotional well-being. The need for programs like the Beit Ummar Children Summer Camp is critical because it provides children with a safe space where they can briefly escape the hardships and engage in activities that support their mental, emotional, and social development, helping them regain a sense of normalcy and joy in their lives.

Solutions

The summer camp addressed these challenges faced by children in the Occupied Territories by offering a wide range of activities designed to foster personal growth, cultural pride, and emotional resilience. These activities focused on:

  1. Creative Expression: through drama, painting, and other forms of art allowed children to express their emotions and thoughts, helping them process the trauma they might have experienced.
  2. Physical Activities: like dabke (traditional Palestinian dance), yoga, and various games promoted physical health, teamwork, and mindfulness, helping children develop both mentally and physically.
  3. Cultural Engagement: through Incorporating traditional cultural elements like dabke helped the children reconnect with their heritage and take pride in their identity, creating a sense of belonging and unity.

The summer camp addressed these challenges faced by children in the Occupied Territories by offering a wide range of activities designed to foster personal growth, cultural pride, and emotional resilience. These activities focused on:

Activities

The Beit Ummar Children Summer Camp provided a thoughtfully planned range of activities to address different aspects of child emotional, social, and physical development. These activities were essential to the success of the camp, as they were not just entertaining but also deeply enriching:

  1. Drama Classes: Drama provided a safe platform for children to explore their emotions and express themselves in ways they might not have been able to otherwise. Through role-play, storytelling, and improvisation, children could step into different roles, which allowed them to express their inner thoughts and emotions, often related to their experiences in a conflict zone. Drama also encouraged teamwork and communication, as children had to work together to perform short plays or skits. This built their confidence and improved their social skills.
  2. Yoga Sessions: Yoga was introduced as a way to promote mindfulness and relaxation, something deeply needed in a stressful environment. Through simple poses and breathing exercises, the children learned techniques to manage anxiety and stress. Yoga also promoted physical health, flexibility, and concentration, giving children the tools to regulate their emotions and improve their overall well-being.
  3. Dabke Classes: Dabke, a traditional Palestinian dance, was not only a fun physical activity but also a cultural connection. Learning and performing dabke connected the children to their Palestinian heritage and provided them with a sense of cultural pride. It also emphasized teamwork, as dabke is a group dance that requires coordination and cooperation. This helped foster a sense of unity and belonging among the children, making them feel connected their peers and to their cultural roots.
  4. Painting and Creative Arts: Painting and other forms of creative arts gave the children an opportunity to express their inner worlds in a non-verbal way. This was particularly therapeutic for children who may have had difficulty talking about their feelings. The creative process allowed them to explore their imagination, express their hopes, and even process trauma. The artworks created by the children were a reflection of their emotional state and often served as a window into their internal struggles and dreams.
  5. Games and Physical Play: Games were an integral part of the camp’s activities, designed to let children simply have fun and enjoy themselves in an otherwise tense environment. From team sports to individual games, these activities promoted physical health, teamwork, and social interaction. These games helped children build friendships, develop communication skills, and experience the joy of being children again, even if only temporarily.
  6. Other activates: Some of the other activities that was done during the summer camp included a first aid course in collaboration with the Palestinian Red Crescent, where the children learned essential skills in light of the country’s current circumstances. They also had hands-on practice to strengthen the knowledge they gained. Additionally, the children were taught road signs and traffic signals to help them understand the basic rules of road safety. There was also a field trip where the children walked through the town to learn about its history and landmarks.

Overall, the combination of these activities was carefully designed to provide a complete approach to the children's development. Each activity contributed to a different aspect of their growth—emotional healing, cultural pride, physical fitness, and creative expression.

Economic Impact

While the camp’s primary focus was on social and emotional development of the children, its economic impact was limited. The project did not have direct financial gains or economic contributions, as its primary goal was to provide emotional relief and educational support to the children in the Occupied Territories. By prioritizing the well-being of the participants over economic outcomes, the camp created a valuable refuge for children, emphasizing healing and personal growth rather than financial benefits.
