Story

Introduction

On October 4, 2020, the Center for Freedom and Justice (CFJ) conducted an agricultural activity on 27 dunams of reclaimed land in Beit Ummar. The project involved planting 230 prickly pear plants, with plans to process them into juice for local sales.

Case

Beit Ummar's reliance on agriculture and the threat of land seizure by occupying forces prompted CFJ to reclaim 27 dunams of land. The initiative aimed to preserve this vital agricultural resource and support local farmers.

Solutions

CFJ's solution involved reclaiming the threatened land and planting 230 prickly pear plants, a resilient crop with deep cultural roots in Palestine. The goal was to produce juice from the pears, offering a sustainable income source for local farmers.

Activities

Activities included land reclamation, planting of prickly pears, and plans to process the fruit into juice. CFJ also organized training for farmers on cultivation techniques and resource management, ensuring the project's sustainability.

Results

Achieved Outcomes

The project successfully planted 230 prickly pear plants on 3 acres of reclaimed land. This not only secured the land from potential seizure but also laid the groundwork for a sustainable agricultural business, benefiting local farmers.

Social Impact

The project fostered a sense of community and cultural pride in Beit Ummar by reviving traditional agricultural practices. It also provided farmers with valuable training, strengthening the agricultural knowledge base within the community.

Economic Impact

Economically, the project created a new revenue stream for farmers by introducing the production and sale of prickly pear juice. This initiative has the potential to significantly boost the local economy by providing a reliable income source for participating farmers.

Conclusion

The CFJ's agricultural initiative in Beit Ummar is a prime example of sustainable development. By reclaiming land, preserving cultural heritage, and creating economic opportunities, CFJ is helping to secure a prosperous future for the local agricultural community.
