Story

Introduction

The Center for Freedom and Justice (CFJ) organized an agricultural activity on June 21st, 2015, as part of their ongoing efforts to support local farmers in Beit Ummar. This initiative focused on reclaiming and restoring 27 dunams of land near Road 60 by planting over 1,600 grape and almond trees. The project aimed to bolster the resilience of Palestinian farmers working in areas under constant threat of land confiscation.

Case

Local farmers in Beit Ummar faced daily harassment by nearby settlers and the looming threat of land confiscation. These challenges made it increasingly difficult for them to sustain their agricultural activities, which are crucial to their livelihoods and the region's economy. The land's proximity to Road 60, an area of strategic importance, further amplified these threats.

Solutions

CFJ's solution involved reclaiming the threatened land through a collaborative effort with local farmers and contractors. By constructing retaining walls and planting high-value crops like grapes and almonds, CFJ aimed to establish a strong agricultural presence on the land, deterring confiscation attempts and ensuring the land's continuous productive use.

Activities

  1. Land Cleaning: Removal of debris, rocks, and other obstructions to prepare the land for agricultural use.
  2. Soil Tillage: Initial preparation of the soil to improve its structure and fertility, making it suitable for planting.
  3. Plowing: Deep plowing to break up compacted soil layers, enhance soil aeration, and facilitate root penetration.
  4. Noxious Weeds Removal: Elimination of harmful weeds that can hinder crop growth and reduce agricultural productivity.
  5. Land Leveling: Using bulldozers and other heavy machinery to level the land, preventing soil erosion and improving irrigation efficiency.
  6. Building Stone Retaining Walls: Construction of stone retaining walls to manage soil erosion, enhance water retention, and create terraced fields suitable for farming.
  7. Irrigation System Installation: Developing and installing efficient irrigation systems to ensure a consistent water supply for crops.
  8. Crop Selection and Planting: Collaborating with agricultural experts to select the most suitable crops for the reclaimed land and initiating the planting process.
  9. Farmer Training Programs: Conducting workshops and training sessions to equip local farmers with modern agricultural techniques, pest management practices, and sustainable farming methods.
  10. Monitoring and Evaluation: Regular monitoring of crop growth, soil health, and overall project progress, with periodic evaluations to ensure project objectives are being met.
  11. Community Engagement: Organizing community meetings and awareness campaigns to foster a sense of ownership and collective responsibility among local farmers.
Results

Achieved Outcomes

The activity resulted in the successful reclamation of 27 dunams of land, the establishment of a secure agricultural area, and the planting of a variety of high-value crops. This project has not only protected the land from potential confiscation but also created a sustainable agricultural environment that can generate substantial income for local farmers.

Social Impact

CFJ's initiative has strengthened the resolve of local farmers to continue working their land despite external pressures. By providing them with the necessary infrastructure and support, the project has fostered a sense of community solidarity and resistance against land confiscation. The activity has also enhanced the community's capacity to sustain its agricultural traditions.

Economic Impact

Economically, the project has provided a new source of income for the farmers involved. The cultivation of grapes and almonds offers multiple revenue streams, helping to offset the economic challenges imposed by the occupation. This initiative has contributed to the overall economic stability of the Beit Ummar community by ensuring the land's productivity and sustainability.

Conclusion

The Center for Freedom and Justice's agricultural activity in Beit Ummar on June 21st, 2015, stands as a significant milestone in the organization's efforts to support local farmers. By reclaiming threatened land and empowering farmers with the tools and knowledge to maintain it, CFJ has made a lasting impact on the region's agricultural sustainability and resilience.
